In February 1942, at the height of Nazi domination during the Second World War, two renowned European intellectuals exiled in Brazil — the Austrian Stefan Zweig and the Frenchman Georges Bernanos — arrange to meet at the Frenchman’s estate in Barbacena. Discussing dehumanisation in times of conflict, the role of the intellectual, nationalism and Europeanism, homogenisation, and social and cultural globalisation, they engage in a conversation that is as illuminating as it is despairing.
