Jazz crosses the Atlantic and returns with compás

Some journeys change the way you play. Marc Miralta’s journey to New York was one of them.

A drummer, composer and one of Spain’s jazz musicians with the most distinguished international careers, Miralta spent years in a city where musical styles seem to meet even before they have been introduced. That experience gave rise in 2000 to New York Flamenco Reunion, a project that even then built a bridge between two languages with an enormous capacity for risk: jazz and flamenco.

But this is not about placing jazz on one side and flamenco on the other. It is about understanding what they share: pulse, improvisation, vertigo, listening, that fraction of a second when one musician throws out an idea and another decides what to do with it.

For his appearance at Alternatilla, Miralta brings together a formidable band in Muro: Santi de la Rubia on tenor saxophone, Xavi Torres on piano, Miquel Álvarez on double bass and Bandolero on percussion, with Marc Miralta himself on drums.

Five musicians making music that knows its roots well, but has no intention of standing still.

There is flamenco. There is jazz. There is New York. There is the Mediterranean. And above all, there are five musicians conversing in the present.

On 28 November, the Teatre de Muro becomes the exact point where all these paths cross.
