One of the great works of political theatre comes to Inca
Playwright and director José Martret revisits Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People in a contemporary adaptation that confirms the continued relevance of one of the great classics of modern theatre. A new production by Teatre Principal de Palma, The Enemy transforms the conflict imagined by Ibsen more than 140 years ago into an incisive reflection on truth, power, manipulation and the economic interests that continue to shape our societies.
The play tells the story of Dr Thomas Stockmann, the medical director of a spa resort that supports the entire economy of a small town. When he discovers that the water is contaminated, he decides to make the information public out of professional responsibility. His denunciation triggers an unequal struggle against political power, commercial interests, the media and a large part of the citizens themselves, who are willing to sacrifice the truth to preserve their well-being.
Critics have highlighted José Martret’s ability to update Ibsen’s text without losing its original strength, turning it into a production that speaks directly to the present. They have also praised the intensity of the staging, the strength of the cast — led by Toni Gomila — and a production design that makes the audience an active part of the conflict.
This performance is presented at Teatre Principal d’Inca as part of Principal en Xarxa, the programme for distributing Teatre Principal de Palma productions among performance venues in the Balearic Islands.
