A real encounter between two essential figures of Catalan culture becomes a brilliant duel of words, ideas and personalities.

On 7 February 1972, a very young Montserrat Roig visited Josep Pla at the farmhouse in Llofriu to interview him. That conversation, later published in Destino, is the starting point for Pla Through Roig, a production by Ferran Utzet that intelligently and rigorously recreates, with an exquisite sense of humour, the meeting between two of the most important figures in 20th-century Catalan literature.

Roig, a journalist, writer and pioneer of Catalan feminism, represents a new generation committed to social change. Pla, probably the most widely read Catalan author of all time, observes the world with deep scepticism and sharp irony. Their convictions are almost diametrically opposed, but they share an absolute admiration for literature and the power of words.

Far from a conventional biographical portrait, Pla Through Roig champions the value of conversation, listening and calm debate. It is a production that reminds us that it is possible to disagree without ceasing to admire the other person, and that the great questions concerning the country, culture, politics and the role of intellectuals remain surprisingly relevant.

As the critic Jordi Bordes writes in Recomana.cat, the work «allows us to discover the passions and respect between people whose ways of proceeding are divergent». In a time of haste, factions and bubbles, Pla Through Roig is also a defence of dialogue as a space for freedom and thought.
