Shakespeare at the height of excellence with Teatro Clásico de Sevilla
Few works have explored the mechanisms of ambition, guilt and the destruction brought about by power as forcefully as Macbeth. Teatro Clásico de Sevilla, one of the country’s most award-winning companies, arrives at Teatre Principal d’Inca with a new production of this great classic by William Shakespeare, created to mark the company’s twentieth anniversary. With more than twenty productions premiered and over eighty awards received, the company has established itself as one of the leading references in contemporary classical theatre.
The production is directed and adapted by Alfonso Zurro, a leading playwright and director on the Spanish theatre scene, whose extensive career has been devoted to the contemporary reworking of major dramatic texts. In this Macbeth, Zurro emphasises the psychological dimension of the tragedy and turns its protagonists’ journey into an unsettling immersion in imagination, fear and guilt, reaffirming the play as one of Shakespeare’s most disturbing and relevant works.
The production brings together a first-rate artistic and technical team, including professionals who have received Max, ADE, Lorca and Escenarios Awards throughout their careers. They include set designers Curt Allen Wilmer and Leticia Gañán, lighting designer Florencio Ortiz and Alfonso Zurro himself.
Why does Macbeth continue to fascinate?
Written more than four hundred years ago, Macbeth remains one of the most influential tragedies in the history of theatre. Shakespeare creates a story about excessive ambition, manipulation, violence and guilt that transcends every era. The Macbeths’ descent into personal destruction raises questions that continue to challenge contemporary audiences about the limits of power, responsibility and the human condition.
This performance has been made possible thanks to the support of the Platea 2026 Programme of the Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música (INAEM), of which Teatre Principal d’Inca is a member.
